Gipionysius and the Pirates Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Let's Look Over Thayer: This has been one of my favorite early caches (especially the original cache container which was a pink plastic dolphin.) But time has marched on and it's time to reset the game board a little bit.

Geocache Description:

King Gipionysius was widely known to have been a tyrant. However, scholars have often cited the following story, attributed to the poet Homer, as an example that Gipionysius could be merciful. The assignment is to locate and interview one of the pirates in order to get a different perspective.

King Gipionysius, like most tyrants, was a micro-manager. He felt that he had to watch over all parts of his Kingdom at all times. This meant a lot of travelling. He had achieved Premier 1K status in the FrequentSailor™ program.

On one of his trips, Gipionysius's ship was captured by pirates. The pirates did not recognize Gipionysius. Their only thought was to sell him into a life of slavery. The pirate's helmsman, though, recognized Gipionysius. He tried to warn the rest of the pirates but they only laughed and continued try to tie a TravelBug tag to Gipionysius's neck. What they didn't know was that Gipionysius was also a great conjuror.

"Homer! Be Tranquil!" bellowed Gipionysius. Suddenly, caches began appearing everywhere! The ship became so full of caches that it threatened to capsize! The pirates, fearing for their lives, all jumped into the water. Gipionysius waved his hands and suddenly all the pirates where transformed into dolphins. Only the helmsman was spared. The dolphins were fated to spend the rest of their lives assisting cachers in need.

Footnotes:

  1. Scholars have long argued over the meaning of incantation bellowed by Gipionysius. It is now thought to have been added by a later scribe in a futile effort to keep Homer from spinning in his grave due to the poetic license taken in modifying his work...
  2. We are indebted to the unknown cacher who left the pirate in the Mystery Ranch Toy Cache.
  3. Please do not bushwhack or torture the pirate.
  4. The pirate, in his current state, does not have any room for booty. Please place any gifts for the pirate in his nearby treasure chest.
  5. Moorage for your land-yacht can be found at N 32° 56.300 W 117° 07.180
  6. Having a pen handy to take notes is recommended.

Note: On 03Apr2006, the pirate moved uphill to a new location with a better view.
