You are looking for a 5" by 2" pill bottle. To retrieve this
stay on the road shoulder, regardless of what your GPSr tells you.
If it indicates anything else, particularly something unwise or
unsafe, severely chastise it (threaten to replace it) and curtail
its visits with HAL (see Stanley Kubrick's "2001"). Do not go on
any private property. Parking is on nearby Wright Street. El Camino
is a busy street at this point so be careful.
This is Chicken Ranch Slough. It is now a
suburban drain. At one time it must have been a carefree
stream, meandering about the countryside on its way to the
swamp that is now Sacramento. In the summertime it must have
dried up as there was no rain to sustain it. At some point it
must have coursed through something associated with chickens.
Perhaps not. As housing built up around it, it was constrained
to its current bed. In some places, like here, it is
concreted. It starts near Carmichael Park and courses down,
running roughly from northeast to southwest where it joins
Strong Ranch Slough near Hurley Way and Ethan Way behind Cal
Expo. In strong local rains it can flood residences down there
when it gets too much for the pumps to push over the
levee.
Across the street you can see Loretto High School which three
codger daughters attended. To the west of Loretto is St.
Philomene's Catholic Church and School which the Codgers call their
spiritual home.
