Geocache Description:

A moorland walk across Access Land to some rarely visited industrial archaeology.

When the railway tunnel linking Manchester with Sheffield under Woodhead opened in 1845, it was the longest in the country and was described by one newspaper as a ‘wondrous triumph of art over nature’. A second, parallel tunnel was completed in 1852 to accommodate increased rail traffic and claimed the lives of 28 navvies during an outbreak of cholera. In 1954, a third, double-track tunnel was completed to replace the two earlier single-track tunnels.

From the cache site you can see, in the near distance, the ventilation shaft of the 1954 tunnel and associated explosives store. This brick structure has substantial steel doors with a large room for the dynamite and a smaller room for the detonators. In the far distance the survey pillar and the ventilation shaft for the 1845 tunnel can be seen. The ventilation shaft is often seen to be ‘smoking’ as the damp air rising from the depths condenses on reaching the surface.
