As many of us have experienced at one time or another, there is an
abundance of water in the island which causes the hills and
mountains to be boggy and wet. This high ground in the interior of
the island is drained by many streams and rivers which on their way
to the sea flow through narrow glens and give rise to many
picturesque and fascinating waterfalls which, depending upon the
time of year and rainfall, may be rushing torrents or mere
trickles.
“See the waterfalls” exhorted TE Brown…. and that’s what these
“Waterfall” caches are all about - being observant and seeing the
waterfalls.
The West Baldwin Valley is bounded on the west by Colden and the
Creg, and by Injebreck and
Carraghan on the north and
east. The western hills are drained by the
Colden river which creates
the "Crag" waterfall before joining the River Glass as it comes
down the valley from Injebreck into the West Baldwin
reservoir.
Beyond the reservoir the River Glass joins the River Dhoo at
Quarterbridge where it forms, unsurprisingly, the Douglas
river.
Although the Crag is less spectacular than some other waterfalls on
the island the beauty of the surrounding area makes the Baldwin
Valleys well worth visiting and exploring - in East Baldwin is the
old church of St Luke's and just beyond that is the site of an old
Tynwald. Apart from the natural beauty of West Baldwin there is a
cache for you to find - it's an
Ammo box somewhere near the
Colden river between the point where the
river falls away from the
plantation and before it joins the Glass.
The listed coordinates are not of the actual cache location but
simply a reference point and the real challenge of this cache is to
determine the coordinates before you set out. All information to do
that is provided here and no further hints will be provided. If you
don’t solve the puzzle first then it may be possible to find the
cache by a diligent search of the area but you should expect that
to take some considerable time and effort.
The cache initially contained:
pen, pencil, Matchbox toy,
"pink ribbon" quarter, "bugs" (fly, butterfly,..),
sponge ball, Minnesota lapel badge (left by Bullwinkle),
small spinning top, cougar and other items.
A note of caution: although the cache is
hidden in a safe location if you are searching in the higher areas
for whatever reasons then be aware that the edges of the steep
sides of the waterfalls may be hidden by thick bracken in the
summer.
