The wood lies just behind the world-famous heart hospital and is on the Pathfinder Long Distance Walk. It is a site of Special Scientific Interest. It was originally a coppice-with-standards woodland of ash, field maple and hazel, though the site is dominated by invasive small-leaved elm and respresents a woodland type scarce in the British Isles. In the springtime there are displays of bluebells, primroses and wood anemones.
The site has been the subject of much research by woodland ecologists and soil scientists and, as a very old secondary woodland, Papworth Wood is of particular importance for the study of factors determining plant colonisation in woodlands.
The cache is outside the wood and beyond it. When going through the wood past the houses on the right, take the right fork across a wooden bridge.
