Posted co-ordinates are for the first stage of the cache. Suggested parking is at N51 34.060 W01 49.681, on one of the quiet side roads nearby.
The Forest has a new car park at N51 34.365 W01 49.688, but it is not open very often at present. When it is we will adjust the site accordingly.
It can get muddy, but paths are gravelled and generally accessible to pushchairs.
Shaw Forest Park is the result of a decision in 1993 by the now non-existant Thamesdown Council to convert a disused landfill site into a new country park close to the town centre.
In 1994 the 100 acre site was included in the Great Western Forest 30 year plan, with a view to planting over a hundred thousand trees to create a community forest complete with open spaces that could be enjoyed by people of all ages.
As of 2006 some 46,000 trees have been planted, many of these on public planting days where members of the community from far and wide arrive with their spades.
The forest is to be opened in three phases with the second phase due to be made available to the public in late 2006.
The first phase has been open for several years, but was one of West Swindon's best kept secrets until 2004 when a proposal was put forward to build a football stadium and leisure complex on the site barely a decade into its growth.
The proposal fell through and the site is currently championed by the Great Western Community Forest (visit link) , Forestry Commission and Shaw Forest Protection Group (visit link) , which was formed in response to the stadium proposal.
The forest is a haven for wildlife with deer, otters and other animals roaming the area.
At the posted co-ordinates find the number of the forest AB, and the year of expected completion CDEF.
