In 1860 the Anaheim Colonists formed the Anaheim Lighter Company. A wharf and storehouse was built inside the entrance to the bay, completed in the fall of 1864. Four lighters were built at a cost of $7000. These lighters were big flat bottomed barges or scows. Outside the entrance a buoy was placed about 300 yards from the shore. A cable was stretched to the wharf. This buoy was firmly anchored. The cable ran through rings attached to the lighters and by pulling on the rope the sailors moved the lighters in or out. Ships anchored near the buoy to load or unload. Later a well constructed 18 mile dirt road was built over which wagon trains hauled cargo to and from the port.
Anaheim Landing served the Santa Ana Valley as a port of entry for fifteen years. In 1876 the Southern Pacific Railroad put the port out of business.
In the prosperous years the landing was also a favorite resort of the farmers living inland. Hotels and a bath house sprang up to take care of the visitors. It took them three hours to get from Anaheim to the resort. There is a letter box here it is a chunk of concrete with a small container in it, my cache is close by.
