Rudy Boysen was Anaheim's city park superintendent from 1927 to 1948. While living in Napa, California, he experimented with crossing different berries. Eventually he used the loganberry, blackberry, and raspberry to produce a huge wonderful berry. When he moved to Anaheim he tried to market the berry through the Coolidge Rare Plant Garden in Pasadena. George Darrow of the U.S. Department of Agriculture had heard about this new berry from Mr. Coolidge. He came to Orange Co. to see Walter Knott because Knott was involved in berry production. They knew that the plant had been developed by a Mr. Boysenin Anaheim. They found Rudy's phone number in the directory and called him up. They asked if Rudy had any of the plants. Rudy said, "I had six plants growing along a ditch bank at an orange grove I once owned, but I sold the place. I figured that no one was interested in the berry." Darrow, Knott, and Boysen went to talk to the new owner of the farm. He gave them permission to look for and take the vines. The vines were almost dead but Walter Knott nursed them back to health. It took three years, from 1933 to 1936, to multiply these six plants into production status. Walter Knott named the berry the Boysenberry in honor of Rudy's work. The next time you eat a piece of boysenberry pie or put boysenberry jam on a piece of toast think of Rudy Boysen and the miracle that this berry still exists. If you are interested in Anaheim history go to GCV929. This cache is very small, log only. The cache is not on the booger, please do not disturb the fake ivy.
