A walk in the footsteps of one of Britains greatest novelists
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single geocacher in possession of a good GPS, must be in want of a good cache. We hope that this fulfils your expectations of what constitutes a good cache. This cache takes you to the small village of Steventon near Basingstoke, which was the birthplace of Jane Austen. Jane was born on 16 December 1775 at Steventon Rectory which is sadly no longer standing. Her father was the Vicar of Steventon and the Rectory was next door to the Church of St Nicholas. The Austen family lived in the Rectory until 1801 and here Jane wrote Northanger Abbey, Sense & Sensibility and Pride & Prejudice, although there were not published at that time. For more information on Jane Austen please see http://www.hants.gov.uk/austen/index.html There is parking next to the Church at N51.13.299 W001.12.766. For more information about the Church please see http://www.dutton.force9.co.uk/nwsadhs/stevchur.htm The cache is a Medium sized lock and lock box and contains the usual goodies with a rather smart Geocaching Keying for the first to find. It is not suitable for buggies as there are stiles to be climbed. For those wishing for a longer walk alternative parking can be found next to the pond at North Waltham N51°12.752, W 001°11,767. This is approximately 1.2 miles from the cache along footpaths which Jane would have used, as she regularly walked this route to Dummer to collect the family’s mail at what is now known as the Wheatsheaf Inn. GPS was somewhat reluctant to settle when placing the cache. We have had our best stab at averaging the results but please let us know if you feel the co-ordinates to be inaccurate.
