Cache is located on the most southeastern cove on Soldier Lake in Halifax County. I hiked a beautiful old woods road to the Soldier Lake Gullies. From there I walked northwest along the boundary of the Waverly Game Sanctuary to the cache location.
Park at the gate on the access road just off Exit 14 for Miller Lake (N44 48.258 W63 35.909). From there follow access road to trailhead for the old woods road at N44 46.685 W63 34.495. This section would be best covered by mountain bike if possible as it follows highway and has a nice smooth surface. Parking on the highway shoulder near the trailhead is not only illegal but dangerous because of the narrow shoulder. Follow the trail to a junction at N44 46.855 W63 33.020 and go left and continue on to the Soldier Lake Gullies. This road is rocky and rough and has some wet spots (most of which can be skirted, I repeat 'most of which'). Follow an overgrown and seldom used ATV trail northwest along the gully floor (which also may be a bit damp) until it is choked off by windfalls and disappears. From here it is only a few hundred meters of a bushwhack to the cove and cache location. Alternate routes include a modern woods road that cuts off some of the distance but who wants to hike on a gravel road through clear cuts when they can take a century old road cut along ridges of rock and following a tumbling stream. The easiest route would definitely be boat on Soldier Lake for any paddlers out there. Please include the route you took in the logs. The given route is about 9-10 km each way.
Cache container is a coffee can in a black nylon bag suspended in a small tangle of tree branches about 7 feet off the ground. There is a $10 East Side Mario's gift card for the FTF. Container is small so trade accordingly. Please report coordinates when found in your logs for me to verify.
