THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE LISTED COORDINATES!!
This cache is one in a series of 5. The other 4 caches in this
series (
Mate in One - Zugzwang,
Mate in One - Fianchetto,
Mate in One - J'Adoube,
Mate in One - En Passant) contain the positions of the pieces
in a chess puzzle. After finding the first 4 caches, you'll need to
figure out the move that produces checkmate for the White side.
This move will reveal the missing digits of the coordinates of
this, the final cache.
checkmate - Any position where a King cannot avoid capture. The
objective end of a chess game.
You'll need to understand a little about chess notation in order
to produce the missing digits in the coordinates of this cache. A
chessboard's squares each have a file (column) letter and a rank
(row) number assigned to them. Just like the latitude and longitude
you use to hunt geocaches.
In the following position,
the checkmating move would be to use the rook on h1 to take the
bishop on h8. That move would be h1-h8. We are only concerned with
the number part of the move for our cache. The number of the square
of the beginning of the move (h1) shall be "a" and the number of
the square of the end of the move (h8) shall be "b". For the move
h1-h8, a=1 and b=8.
Now once you figure out the checkmating move, you'll have your
own "a" and "b" variables. The final cache coordinates are at the
following location:
N 40°59.uvw', W074°17.xyz'
where
u= a-4
v= b-a
w= a-4
x= a+3
y= b+3
z= b
The cache is a camo-painted ammo box with trade items and a
pencil inside. Bring your own writing instrument just in case
though. We hope you enjoy this puzzle!
