Geocache Description:

The cache is located in the village of Gleaston, famed for its nearby watermill and ruined castle.

Gleaston watermill and adjacent buildings have been restored to provide public access to the working water corn mill, Dusty Miller's tea shop (which serves some lovely home made food) and Pig's Whisper Country Store.

The mill dates back to the early 1300’s and was the manorial mill for nearby Gleaston Castle, which is unfortunately now in ruins and not open to the public (although it can be viewed from the road). The present mill was rebuilt in 1774 and visitors can see the 18 foot (5.5 metre) waterwheel and machinery operating most days.

The first archaeological excavation of the area occurred in 1993 with the purpose of investigating the original mill. However, a number of Mesolithic flints were also found and there is strong evidence pointing to a substantial Mesolithic settlement of the area. Some of the artefacts from the digs are now on display in The Mill.
