Geocache Description:

Did you know that there are Fireflies on the West Coast?

They live mainly in Washington and Oregon and do not glow. BUT there is a small colony of 'glowing' fireflies that reside in a small wooded area close to UVIC. These woods have many entrances. The one the fireflies use is marked by two brown square wooden posts. (you may have already past by it) To locate this well used pathway note the 3 digit number on the red object at the above co-ords. Do a little math....ABC+(AxBxC)+(A+B+C)....you are that many feet away. The firefly's 'glow' can ONLY BE SEEN AT NIGHT as they are totally invisible during the daylight hours. They like to keep to themselves and tend to take the FIRST less-beaten path they encounter. 'Guide' fireflies have the sole role in life to lead the others to their home deep in the woods. They lay in wait until they see the light of another....then they light up to lead the way. The more light they see the more they 'glow'. Closer to the colony one might see, not only the 'guides' but, some other fireflies too. These fireflies serve as 'guards' to protect the 'queen' from predators. The 'queen' is by far the largest (6-8 times as large) and has a pure white 'glow'. She can usually be found, glowing brightly, a meter or two above her nest.
