Geocache Description:

The cache is located near the end of a quarter mile section of old 410 that has a beginning near the Summit Lake Park & Ride and an abrupt end at SR 8. This segment of road has been renamed to Summit Lake Cut-Off NW.

US 410 was part of the original US Highway system of 1926. US 410 ran from Jct US 95 in Lewiston, ID to Aberdeen, WA. When the current state highway numbering system was first posted in January 1964, US 410 functioned as SR 410 in Washington State. US 410 started at Jct US 101 in Aberdeen and headed east via Montesano, Elma, and McCleary to Mud Bay, a half dozen miles west of Olympia. At Mud Bay, US 101 joined US 410 and the coincident routes headed east to Jct I-5/US 99 at Exit 104, where US 101 ended. At Exit 104, US 410 joined I-5/US 99 and headed NE from the Olympia area to Tacoma. In 1962, US 12 was extended west from Missoula to Lewiston in 1963. In 1967, the US 12 designation replaced most of the US 410 designation from Lewiston to Aberdeen. In the Cascade Mountains, US 12 crossed White Pass rather than Chinook Pass, crossed by US 410. Former US 410 from Jct US 12 near Naches to Sumner is now SR 410, from Sumner to Tacoma SR 167, from Tacoma to Olympia I-5, from Olympia to Mud Bay US 101, and from Mud Bay to Elma SR 8. There are two ways to get to the cache: 1) You may park at the P&R and get the experience of walking on the old route. 2) You may travel by a vehicle to get the feeling of a narrow highway as it makes a bend and straight away There is one unfortunate situation to mention. Although I initially cleaned up the road from 400’ to the cache, the remaining highway segment is ripe for C.I.T.O. or hopefully something the State of Washington D.O.T. and local residents will continue to clean up. Please let me know in your log the garbage status. Thanks
