Geocache Description:

A Little History:

The Memorial to Tomochichi consists of a granite boulder displaying a copper plaque with the following inscription:

IN MEMORY OF
TOMO-CHI-CHI
THE MICO OF THE YAMACRAWS
THE COMPANION OF OGLETHORPE
AND THE FRIEND AND ALLY OF THE
COLONY OF GEORGIA

THIS STONE HAS BEEN HERE PLACED
BY THE GEORGIA SOCIETY OF THE
COLONIAL DAMES OF AMERICA
1739 - 1899

Tomochichi, chief of the Yamacraw Indian Tribe, assisted James Oglethorpe in establishing the British settlement in Georgia. Tomochichi died October 5, 1739, and he was buried center of Percival Square, which was later renamed Wright Square. The grave site was commemorated with a marker of "a Pyramid of Stone", as described by Oglethorpe.

A monument was erected to William Gordon in the center of the square replacing the monument to Tomochichi. On the 160th anniversary of Tomochichi's death, a granite boulder was placed in the square to commorate the death of Tomochichi in the corner of Wright square.

Now For A Little Fun:

This brings us to the following thing that most of the locals tell their children when visiting this granite boulder, and if you have children, why not have a little fun with this one (or any other gullible individual). Tell them the following:

Run around the granite boulder 3 times really fast.
Knock on the plaque and yell at the ground "Tomochichi, what are you doing down there"?
Put your ear to the granite boulder, and you will hear him say nothing.

(You'll notice there is a well worn path around the boulder)

Note:

Be careful of the muggles in this area. This is usually a crowded square. The cache is not located on either of the monuments in the park. It is near the shrubs, but you do not need to dig in the bushes for this one. It is about 1 foot off the ground.
