A small cache near Fort Dauphin. Dauphin's first geocache!
Francois de la Verendrye discovered Lake Dauphin in 1739. It was named after Prince Dauphin, the heir to the throne in France.
From 1797 - 1831, Fort Dauphin was established to promote trade in the area.
Near the cache is a replica of a palisaded North West Co. post. Located there is a trapper's cabin, trading post, blacksmith shop, two log cabins, storehouse, and church. Admission fee to go in but the cache is outside the palisades. Original location was on the south bank of the Valley River about 4 km from Dauphin Lake. It was abandoned in 1821. The Hudson's Bay Co. had built a competing post, same name, in 1817 just 60 yards from the North West post.
Cache is a 1/2L winter friendly cammo lock & lock containing a FTF Certificate, and small trading items. Hopefully this cache is a seed for many more in this interesting town.
