Bloody Bucket Road Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

gladeslvr & crew: Just haven't had the time to replace this one so I'm archiving it. It seems to have been plagued by problems anyway...maybe the old woman's ghost had something to do with it?????

Geocache Description:

You are looking for a camoed water bottle. Small items only.

This story was featured in the book "Weird Florida" by Charlie Carlson. After doing some research on my own, I found that it was made up by a local writer as a Halloween story. But, you know what they say...truth is stranger than fiction, so you be the judge. The road is not named Bloody Bucket Road. Some say the name came from a bar that used to be located on it called "the Bloody Bucket". Others may say it comes from the following local legend...

Many years ago there was a former slave from Georgia who was the local midwife. She delivered hundreds of babies in the area. She eventually became concerend that some families were having way too many babies. So she took it upon herself to ease their burdens and would smother the babies right after birth. She'd then take the little bodies and bury them in the woods by the river. It didn't take too long for the town folk to realize what was going on and she was thereafter never called on to deliver anymore babies. After a spell, the old woman started to go a bit looney. She had an old bucket that would constantly fill up with blood. She knew it was the blood of all the children she'd killed come back to haunt her. She would haul the bucket down the road and clean it out in the river. It didn't do any good because as soon as she'd get home it would fill up again. One day, she was down at the river, exhausted, washing her bucket out when she fell in and drowned.

Now, some say at night you can hear the cries of the children coming from the woods by this cache. And some say at night, when the moon is full, the river is the color of blood.

Fact or Legend? Who knows? But I do know you'd never catch me looking for this cache at night!
