Geocache Description:

This cache is situated near to the top of Hard Level Gill with excellent views over Melbecks Moor.

There are many sights to see on this walk (you will pass Postie’s Hard Level cache on the way).

Your start point is a car park at N54º23.637 W002º01.090. From there you need to walk down the road towards the river and bear left along a well made, hard packed track which will take you to Old Gang smelt mill which was given Scheduled Ancient Monument status in 1978. This is an abandoned lead mill but extensive structures still remain as a memorial to the areas industrial past.

Further on, you will pass by a waterfall (apparently there are some extensive caves), other mining structures and the Level House Bridge. In the distance, you will see Great Pinseat (there’s a trig point if you want to go cross country and grab it).

The cache is situated near the rocky spoil tips out on the moor, which poses the question whether these areas should have been reclaimed or (as they have been) left to their natural devices.

The views across the moors are fantastic, but you are left to wonder whether similar man-made structures would be allowed to decay in a similar manner...will the white windmills be the heritage sites/SAMs of the future? It's an interesting thought.

This is an easy, relatively level walk, about 5 ½ miles in total, there and back, and is suitable for pushchairs though there is a small ford to cross.

Check out photo #16 for a picture clue to the cache location as 'under some stones' isn't a particularly good clue when you're on a spoil tip.
