Marlatt Park resides northwest of Manhattan. Its history begins with the deeding of the land in 1864 to Elias D. Saunders by an act of Congress for payment of war services during the War of 1812. In a document signed by President Abraham Lincoln, the land was given to Washington Marlatt by Saunders. In 1881, Dr Marlatt bought forty more acres of adjoining land for ninety dollars. The land was used chiefly as pasture for cattle. In 1940 the Marlatt heirs, Dr Charles L. Marlatt and Dr Abby Lillian Marlatt, donated the land to Kansas State University. The deed stated that the land was to be used by the faculty and students of the university for recreation purposes with the condition that the prairie be kept as nearly as possible in its "primal" condition. Some have looked at the prairie and thought it dull and monotonous. The great diversity of the prairie is lost to the motorist passing by at sixty-five miles an hour. But the prairie is not for quick appraisal. To appreciate the prairie requires walking through it and looking closely at the components making up this ecosystem. The placement of this cache will allow you to do so. Trails consist of mowed grass paths. Good walking shoes are recommended. By following the trail system, the cache can be reached with a minimum of wading through much brush.
The cache at this location is in a green ammo can with black geocache lettering and official geocache sticker. Standard trade items are welcome, but particularly anything to do with dogs or walking your dog.
