in our disclaimer.
A view from a rock, a view of the rock, and perhaps a glimpse of something else entirely. Bring a pair of binoculars if you have them.
The first two locations will take you near some steep drops, so please take extra care with young children in this area.
--
Make your way down to the first waypoint, but don't go any further than the ledge. Take a moment to enjoy the view.
Can you see the lookout tower on One Tree Hill, 21km due north ?
The spire on the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bendigo, 26km and a little west of north is also visible when the sunlight catches it.
Using the name of this lookout (five letters), and a numbering scheme where the letter a=1 and z=26, locate the second waypoint by answering the following questions.
Let (ab) = the numeric value of the third letter in the name.
Let (c) = the numeric value of the fourth letter in the name.
--
The second waypoint is located 1.5km away at S 37° 00.[149-ab] E 144° 18.[559+c].
As you pass a sign containing the mount's name and elevation, take note of the large stone cairn located in the background. This cairn holds a triangulation station survey marker with a stamped ID of 00003, although this number isn't stamped into the marker as is usually the case (see attached picture).
For those of you who need an excuse to visit another summit, I've included waypoints for some other trig stations with low stamped IDs from across the state. Note that a trig station with the stamped ID 00008 doesn't appear to exist.
If you visit any of these other sites, please post a photo of the marker and its surroundings back here.
Continue on towards the second waypoint.
There is a siding about 140m from the waypoint, park here and proceed on foot. A fire trail leads to the left, but a direct route taken along a fainter trail is best.
You are looking for the mount's southern trig marker, and will need to make a note of its stamped ID.
Let (defgh) = the trig station marker's stamped ID.
Take a moment to walk around the base of this location, which exposes the true nature of the mount. Can you find some pins driven into the side of one of the rock faces in this area ? (hint: near a deeper gully) Was the purpose of the pins for something old, or something new ?
The cache is a 1 litre Sistema container hidden in the traditional manner, and is located 1.8km away at S 37° 01.[015+de] E 144° 18.[392-fg].
There are several walking trails inside this enclosure, and it may be possible to catch a glimpse of some shy creatures in their native habitat.
If you spot anything interesting, please log a waypoint back here for other geocachers to find.
