The cache is situated on Horned Hill, which at 106 metres is the highest point on Horn Island and offers great views of Cape York and the Islands of the Torres Strait.
Horned Hill can be seen from virtually anywhere on the Island and can be accessed via a cross-country walk or for visitors passing through with less time on their hands, by using a system of roads and tracks to save time.
For the more adventurous, the cross-country option is approximately 3.5-4km and should take you 2.5-3 hours return from the airport.
The easy option also commences at the airport and can be undertaken by foot or for the most part, by vehicle. From the road junction in position S10.35.556 E142.17.564 take the well-formed dirt road for 2.3km, at road junction S10.36.070 E142.18.910, turn left onto a not-so-nice track and follow it (2.2km) around an old tailings dam, across the dam wall and up to the base of the hill (S10.35.648 E142.19.156). The last section is completed on foot. Take the track (mostly overgrown) 0.8km up the hill to the summit and the cache.
The cache is a medium sized plastic container with a screw on lid hidden under rocks. The original contents included a free ball cap gift, notebook cover, bandaid, pencil & eraser, Reef Helicopter badges, plastic octopus, plastic dolphin, spinning disc, 50 cent PNG coin, pencil grip, toy truck, Australian 1950’s penny and a ribbon.
Please note:
BEWARE OF LOOSE ROCKS ON SUMMIT.
