Geocache Description:

Pencil cache is for trading pencils! Park at the APU Moseley Sports Center or on Wesleyan Drive.
Coordinates are accurate within 33 feet.

Many people just take pencils for granted, but what would we do if we didn't have them? The first mass-produced pencils were made in Nuremberg, Germany in 1662. These were descended from ancient writing instruments such as the stylus, a thin metal or lead rod which left a light mark. When nontoxic graphite was discovered in England it came into widespread use. Graphite was encased in string, and then wood, because it was so thin and brittle. This was when the modern pencil was born. China was the source of high quality graphite in the 1800s. Yellow is associated with honor and respect in China, so American manufacturers painted their pencils yellow. This paint color has been the most common ever since.

The purpose of this cache is to collect a wide variety of pencils. Try to put an unique or different pencil in this cache!

Note as of 6/9/06: The cache has been replaced in a new location, to throw off looters, but it is still right next to the trail.
Note as of 6/5/07: The cache was found again after it went missing so it was replaced with an ammo can in a nearby location.
To keep the cache from being stolen yet another time, do not let it be seen by muggles and make sure no part is clearly visible as you leave!
