Mini Brat's Birthday Cache Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Brat Pack: Unfortunately it appears that this cache has been located within a site of special archaeological interest and should not have been placed there back in 2006 - the Reviewers now have more sophisticated software available to them which now show this. As we have drawn a blank with CADW getting the formal approval that we now need we have no option but to archive this cache - however Beaupre Castle warrants visits so we hope to replace this cache shortly with a Multi that will require a visit to the castle and then leads you to the final cache in a location that is now acceptable to Groundspeak under the current rules.

Geocache Description:

South Wales Geocachers are proud to be organising The UK Mega in 2011

Mega Wales 2011

The event will be held in Swansea on July 31st

An easy cache located after a short walk across some grass fields. The terrain is gently undulating and there are a number of stiles to cross. The grass can be slippery when wet - also watch out for "sheep's mess". Our youngest son (Mini Brat) wanted us to place our first cache on his Birthday. He is an enthusiastic geocacher and picked the site himself. It is an easy cache, which will hopefully appeal to young and old alike. Access to the site is via a public footpath that travels along the banks of the River Thaw and across fields normally containing sheep, consequently no dogs are allowed. If just planning on doing the cache it should only take 20-30 mins. However it is worth spending a little time looking around the ruins of nearby Beaupre Castle (pronounced "Bewper"). A late 13th century fortified manor with 16th century additions. Much of Beaupre is ruined, but the well-preserved three-storey gatehouse and Tudor porch are well worth seeing. The manor is built about an inner courtyard, with an decorative porch giving way to a 14th century Great Hall. The castle is open from 10.00-16.00hrs except Sundays, although in practice it appears to be open at other times! There is no entry fee. A couple of miles south of Cowbridge, on the St Athan road, there is a small lay-by where you can leave your car and walk across the fields towards the cache and on to Beaupré Castle.
