This multi-cache will take you to several interesting and historical sites in Decatur County. These are located near the ghost town of Traer. There are five people that call Traer home.
Start at the given coordinates above, which are in the middle of a country road. From here you will be able to view Elephant Rock and get the coordinates for the second part of the multi.
Elephant Rock is a natural stone arch. The limestone rock was used as a landmark by early explorers. Buffalo Bill Cody is said to have been involved in a fierce battle with Indians in the vicinity of this rock formation.
Natural erosion created Elephant Rock and one day it will destroy it. Plants grow on the rock itself. Water seeps into the cracks and eats away at the natural cement that holds the limestone together. In winter the water freezes and expands breaking the pieces of the stone off in the process.
You will want to bring a pair of binoculars for a closer look since the arch is on private property and permission has NOT been given yet to hike up.
