Founded in 1958, the University of Oulu is a young, rapidly developing institution. It is the second largest university in Finland. There are nearly 14,500 students in six faculties: Economics and Business Administration, Education, Humanities, Medicine, Science and Technology. The focus research areas of the University of Oulu are Biotechnology, ICT and Environmental and Northern Issues.
The main campus, Linnanmaa, is located about 5 km (about 3 miles) from the city centre. Busses run regularly between the centre and the campus. Bike routes are excellent. As you will see, the campus area is quite large, as most of the faculties are located in the same big building.
The Linnanmaa campus has four different parts. The oldest part built seen here was designed and in the 1970s and has the bright colours of the time.
South West from the coordinates is the Zoological Museum. I strongly suggest you to pay a visit there. It has an extensive collection of both vertebrate (50 000) and invertebrate (about 2 million) species. The museum attraction is a diorama, that covers animals and scenery from Northern Norwegian coast to the southern coast of Finland (1200 km).
Near the University of Oulu is the Botanical Gardens, there you can learn about thousands of different kinds of plants. It is located at the northernmost corner of the university, only a short walk away (Parking area: N 65° 03.781 E 025° 27.949). You can easily spend several hours in the vast garden area. Tropical and subtropical plants can be viewed in the Romeo and Juliet greenhouses. There is also a new cache at the garden area made by pattipolvi:(GC13ARB) Botanical Gardens
The Geological museum of the University of Oulu was founded in 1969 with the aim of collecting, conserving and maintaining geological samples for university and general educational purposes and for research. The number of catalogued samples at the end of 2001 was 12296 of which about 3200 were exhibited. The collections are mainly from Fennoscandia but the mineral and rock collections in particular are of worldwide origin.
In order to get to the cache you must first enter the University door B(in the north west corner) and find a staircase. The cache is hidden at it's highest point. No need to go outside once there, but the view is nice. Good luck!
