Haydon Spa & the old Hexham Road Traditional Cache
Haydon Spa & the old Hexham Road
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
A nice level walk along the old disused road after being straightened out in the 1970’s. You can do the extended walk from Haydon Bridge but there is parking closer to the cache.
NOTE: 3 Aug 06 The parking coordinates are currently not accessable due to construction work. Hope they replace the path to the Spa while they are working there.
The cache is still accessable from the east although you will not pass by the spa.
From the parking coordinates the Haydon Spa is just over 100 feet in front of you towards the river and down the bank. You do not have to visit the Spa to get this cache and can see part of it from the top.
The path that used to go to it has disappeared due to subsidence and there is now an unmarked and unmaintained track down to it for those who want to scrabble down the hill for a better look.
Over a hundred years ago the same situation had arose and they appointed a committee to restore the spa which had the original basin built in 1863 to carry the sulphur water from the natural spring to the basin. The water is still draining into the basin and it’s up to you if want to sample it or not.
Unfortunately what was once our most popular attraction for tourists and locals alike in the first half of the twentieth century is now left as it is although there was a seat built in the memory of Raymond McVay who died in 1988.
On to the cache, which is an easy walk on tarmac along the old Hexham road (now the A69) where you can still see the road markings and hear the traffic from the new section of the road. It is near an old layby and bridge which should give you a clear view for GPS reception.
PLEASE TAKE CARE WHEN TURNING OFF AND JOINING THE A69 AS IT IS A VERY BUSY ROAD.
