An ammo box hidden on an old railroad right-of-way.
Cache is hidden on private property with permission. The “No Trespassing” signs apply only to muggles, and cachers are welcome. The property owner requests however that cachers only walk as far as the cache and not continue farther onto the property.
This is the site of what was known locally as the “Old Overhead Bridge”. This was an old wooden railroad bridge that was torn out in the 1990’s. You can still see some of the remnants of the wooden foundations in the old railroad right-of-way on both sides of the road.
My research on this location indicates that in 1874 the right-of-way was first sold to the Paris & Danville Railroad Company at the bridge site. The railroad was built in 1875 and according to one record, it was the first railroad through Crawford County. In 1879 the railroad was sold to the Danville & Southwestern Railroad. In 1883 it was sold to the Wabash St. Louis and Pacific Railway. In 1891 it was sold to the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis RR (often called the “Big Four”), which in 1943 became the Cleveland, Cincinnati & St. Louis RR. In 1971 it was sold to Penn Central who owned it until the railroad discontinued its use of this route in the 1980’s. While searching for the cache, look around at the many wildflowers, birds and other wildlife who now share the right-of-way with the memory of steam engines and countless trains which traveled over this spot for a hundred years.
January 2007 update: Saw a flock of wild turkeys today at the cache site while checking on the cache.
