Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The cache is at Bidlake Corner, a memorial garden to cyclist F.T. Bidlake. It is just off the A1. The cache can only be retrieved from OUTSIDE the garden, so please respect the memorial and do not hunt around inside the garden.
The idea of this "cash cache" is to provide a means to swap coins. Please bring along a coin of your own and swap it for one in the cache.
The cache is officially described as small, but had there been a "very small" category, we would have used that. It is bigger than a micro, and is capable of holding a good number of coins, although the log book has the style of a micro. It is big enough to host geocoins and also small, flat travel bugs.
Initially, the cache contained coins from Austria, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, France, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Spain, U.A.E, U.S.A., West Germany.
Please state in your log what coin you have left so that other countries whose coins have been in this cache can be listed HERE: Australia, Belgium, Brunei, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Croatia, Cuba, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Falkland Islands, Germany, Greece, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Jersey, Malta, Mexico, Namibia, Netherlands, Peru, Philippines, Seychelles, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, United Kingdom.
If you are putting in a EURO coin, PLEASE REMEMBER TO STATE WHICH COUNTRY IN THE EURO-ZONE IT IS FROM.
Frederick Thomas Bidlake was born in 1867 and was an English racing cyclist in the late 19th century, holding many national records. He subsequently became an important administrator in cycling and sought-after timekeeper for races. He is known as the father of time-trialing.
He died in 1933 after being knocked from his bicycle, and his ashes were scattered at Girtford Bridge just north of the memorial garden where the cache is situated.
Further information can be found at http://www.bidlakememorial.org.uk and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Thomas_Bidlake.
Parking is available at N 52 07.467 W 000 18.042. This can only be accessed from the northbound A1, and is the signposted turn for Bedford just before the A1 Sandy roundabout. This sliproad has a layby on the right (which was originally the southbound carriageway of the A1 before a new bridge was built to "straighten" the A1).
If you are travelling south on the A1, go across the roundabout at Sandy, towards Biggleswade/London, but get yourself in the right-hand lane ready for a right turn across the central reservation to Beeston. Turn right into Beeston and once there, turn around and go back onto the A1 northbound, going immediately onto the sliproad to Bedford. DO NOT DO A U-TURN ON THE A1!
