Geocache Description:

This cache is located close to Charter Wood, between Bawburgh and Bowthorpe, and can be accessed from a number of routes.

Our favourite is to park at Chapel Break Village Hall (N52.38.405, E001.12.712) and follow GPS towards Bawburgh. Turn Right down New Road and continue until you get to a large concrete ring located at N53.38.243 E001.12.180, where you need to turn right into the field. Ahead of you is Charter Wood, which was planted in 1994 as part of the Norwich 800 Charter celebrations. Follow the footpath around the wood towards the cache. Alternatively, you can park at the Industrial Estate (N52.38.612 E001.12.307) or down Bawburgh Lane (off the A1074) and follow GPS, which maybe a shorter routes but not such a nice walk!

Now for a little history lesson (Nor-folk should know this if they paid attention at school, but for those that didnt and the non-locals among you, some background knowledge!). In 1194 King Richard I (the Lionheart) granted the City of Norwich a Charter, allowing it to pay a fixed sum of 200 marks (£108) to the King, instead of all the rents, tolls and taxes paid previously. It freed the citizens from tolls throughout England and gave Norwich the same rights and priveleges as London. This was a landmark in the City's status that saw Norwich become independant and self-governing.

In 1994, Norwich celebrated 800 years of city status, with various events. One of which was the plantation of Charter Wood, by the Norwich Fringe project. Local school children and community groups helped plant the trees, which are all thought to be native species from the time of King Richards Reign. We hope you agree this is a lovely area - spoiled only slightly by the noise from the bypass and occasional racing bikes, and more recently the new housing estate!
The cache is placed close to the wood, in a regular lock-top lunchbox. Please note, the young woodland and footpaths are not marked on the OS map, but it should be obvious as they are well-trodden. To get back to your car you can either re-trace you steps or continue around the field to make a circular walk. Original contents:
Logbook/Pencil/Sharpener/Pen
Peak District keyring compass (FTF)
Sky Diver toy
Mini torch
Address Book
Toy car
Bouncy balls
Monkey zipper
Monkey air freshener
Hair band
We hope you enjoy the cache, and knowing a little more about the history of our fine city!
