The Big Fire Traditional Cache

A roadside cache near Hendriksdal between Nelspruit and Sabie.
A few years ago, a moment's carelessness caused the biggest fire
ever in the area. Thousands of hectares of forest were lost. The
cache location gives a view of a small part of the fire damaged
forests, which extend for a further 10kms in the direction of
Nelspruit. A lot of the burnt timber has been felled, some areas
have already been replanted, and you will see many fire damaged
trees alongside the road.
Update July 2007 - We believed that this fire (about 2003) was the
worst possible - little did we know. Wildfires swept though this
area in July 2007 that made this one look Mickey Mouse. The area
immediately in front of the cache escaped almost unscathed this
time, but there was massive damage a few kms to the north. Take a
look at the photos we uploaded on 31st July 2007 to what what
happened.
Update June 2009 - The trees in front of the cache are growing well
and there's almost no sign of the fire left. Amazing to see how
quickly nature can recover.
