Little Luckiamute Trail Traditional Cache

Explore an abandoned trail along a beautiful coast range river.
The Little Luckiamute trail used to be maintained by volunteers, in cooperation with the BLM and Willamette Industries- the former owner of most of the land along the river. Since the Weyerhasuer takeover, the trail has not been maintained and logging operations have made many portions difficult to navigate. Now it is mostly just visited by anglers who prefer to travel IN the river. If you are interested in continuing on the trail-2 miles further up from the cache site are two beautiful waterfalls and a campsite.
To find the trailhead from Falls City, take Blackrock road 3.5 miles west and park near the gate. Walk up the road about 100 yards and you will see a sign for the Little Luckiamute Trail. A plank bridge formerly crossed the creek, but now only a homemade Mac 5 log bridge is in place to assist you across during times of high water. Once across the creek, the trail follows the river. You will first have to clamber over and under some large blow downs, then climb through a nice section of forest in a small patch of BLM land before returning to the riverside. It gets more overgrown as you travel upstream. It will soon feel like a bushwack and you may lose the trail in some sections, but with some geocunning and perserverance, you'll eventually find it again. Feel free to bring your clippers or machete to contribute to trail maintenance. The hike is about 3 1/2 miles round trip with very little elevation gain. There is no poison oak and very little blackberry, but you may enounter other leg scratchers such as stinging nettle, salmonberry, gooseberry and oregon grape. I suggest wearing long pants.
When you see the big multi-trunked maple, you can head down towards the river bed and find a critter trail to take you a bit downstream to the cache site- a smooth stoned beach perfect for a picnic. I always see dippers on this river. Enjoy your adventure!
