This cache has been set with the permission of the Lyles Station Preservation group. It's initial contents include a CICO Geocoin, a White Jeep TB, and a First Finders button. It is an ammo box.
Lyles Station, Indiana, the state’s last remaining African-American settlement, celebrated its past, present, and future as it dedicated a historical marker for the southwestern Indiana community and hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, June 24, 2002, on the grounds of the Lyles Consolidated School, 4.5 miles west of Princeton, Indiana.
Today, Lyles Station school is a multi-function historical information center. Visitors can tour the reconstructed school, browse the museum, and learn a little of local history.
The school building itself is used to provide homework assistance to local school children, and boasts a modern bank of internet accessible computers. Various programs are offered to those who are interested in learning what it was like to live in the 1800s and early 1900s.
Field Trip day includes learning how to churn butter, hand crank ice cream, saw wood with a hand saw, and in general.. how life was lived in the early days of the settlement.
The Heritage Classroom program, gives children the opportunity to experience school as it used to be.. right down to the slate boards as the writing material of choice.
Another interesting program is the Underground Railroad simulation. This program geared for older children, allows them to experience what it was like to be a runaway slave. Details are complete right down to the dogs tracking the "slaves" as they make their way to freedom.
Plans are also in the works for a Healthy Walk Trail, which will allow those who enjoy walking as exercise a place to come and walk in the scenic countryside.
If you are a history buff, you have to check Lyles Station School out. It is one of the few local historical places that you can really get immersed in. Be sure to check out their web site for more information.
