Geocache Description:

(The original cache for the Yellowstone Series in Roberts was muggled. This one is more muggle proof, with the first waypoint being the same, but the final waypoint has been changed.)

Roberts has a small downtown, right along the route of the Yellowstone Trail and the tracks of the Chicago and Northwestern rail line.

At the coordinates above, you will find the old Sidetrack Saloon, now a beauty shop, with a mural covering it's west side. The mural is in some disrepair. However, it celebrates the days when the "400" steamed through town, bringing passengers and prosperity.

The "400" ran between Chicago and the Twin Cities and was introduced in 1935 to compete with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy's Zephyrs and the Milwaukee Road's Hiawathas. This train was named because it traveled the 400 miles between the cities in 400 minutes. Chicago and Northwestern was the first railroad to start a high-speed Chicago-Twin Cities schedule. Initially, it used refurbished instead of new equipment. Later, in 1939, they modernized the "400" with new E3A diesel locomotive pairs and streamlined cars.

CNW eventually renamed the original "400" that ran through Roberts to the "Twin Cities 400" as the CNW stuck almost all of its passenger trains with the 400 moniker, including the Flambeau 400, Rochester 400, and the Kate Shelley 400. CNW ceased running the Twin Cities 400 in 1963.

The final cache is at the following coordinates:

44.59.ABC
92.32.DEF

A = The second digit on the front of the train in the mural
B = The number of letters on the name of the depot
C = The third digit on the front of the train in the mural
D = The number of wheels on the coal car
E = The fourth digit of the year the mural was painted
F = The number of women in the mural

This is one of several caches I have placed along the route of the historic Yellowstone Trail. The trail is a historic motor route that went across Wisconsin from 1918 to 1930.

The Wisconsin portion of the Yellowstone Trail is 406 miles long, starting at the state line south of Kenosha and going north, and then west to Hudson. The Wisconsin segment is just a part of one of America’s first transcontinental auto routes, a 3,754-mile long road that started in Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts and went to Puget Sound, Washington.
