*** CACHE IS NOT AT THE LISTED COORDINATES
***
BACKGROUND:
As a former
band director, I feel the need to continue educating others about
music. I will use this series of caches to share information about
some of my favorite composers. Enjoy!

Gustav
Mahler
THE CACHE:
To determine the correct coordinates
leading to the cache container, you must first explore the life and
works of Gustav Mahler (goos´taf
ma´lr) by answering the following
questions:
- Gustav Mahler was born into a Jewish family in Kalischt,
Bohemia, the second of twelve children. In what year was he
born?
- If 1850, then A = 2
- If 1855, then A = 4
- If 1860, then A = 6
- If 1865, then A = 8
- How many symphonies did Gustav Mahler
complete during his lifetime?
- If 3, then B = 3
- If 5, then B = 2
- If 9, then B = 1
- If 10, then B = 0
- Mahler’s “Symphony No. 1 in D major,” originally a tone poem
called “Titan” (after a novel by Jean Paul), was written between
1884 and 1888. The symphony is approximately 55 minutes long.
The start of which movement of Mahler's Symphony No. 1
features a double bass soloist performing a “funeral march”
variation on the theme of "Frère Jacques", distinguishing
it as one of the few symphonic pieces to use the instrument in such
a manner.
- If movement 1, then C = 3
- If Movement 2, then C = 5
- If Movement 3, then C = 7
- If Movement 4, then C = 9
- Symphonies are often labeled using a number and a tonal
center or key: example “Symphony No. 1 in D Major.”
Mahler’s fourth symphony uses what tonal
center?
- If C minor, then D = 1
- If E-flat Major, then D = 3
- If A Minor, then D = 5
- If G Major, then D = 7
- Which of these quotes is not attributed to Gustav
Mahler?
- If “If you think you're boring your audience, go slower not
faster,” then E = 7
- If “What's best in music is not to be found in the notes,”
then E = 8
- If “To sing a wrong note is insignificant, but to sing
without passion is unforgivable,” then E = 9
- If "If a composer could say what he had to say in words he
would not bother trying to say it in music,” then E = 0
- In February 1911, during a long and demanding concert season
in New York conducting the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Mahler
fell seriously ill with a streptococcal blood infection, and
conducted his last concert in a fever. Returning to Europe, he was
taken to Paris, where a new serum had recently been developed. He
did not respond, however, and was taken back to Vienna at his
request. He died there from his infection on May 18, 1911, leaving
his final symphony unfinished. How old was Gustav Mahler
when he died?
- If 50, F = 9
- If 51, F =
7
- If 56, F = 5
- If 61, F = 3
Now plug these variables into the formula below to learn the
correct coordinates. The coordinates will get you pretty close but
there is a great deal of tree cover so getting a good signal may be
difficult. You'll be looking for a camouflaged waterproof match
container medicine bottle holding a small logbook. Bring
your own writing utensil to sign the log. No room for trade items
but a small surprise awaits the lucky cacher who is first to find
this, my very first hide.
