A sandy hike through a remote area of SE Luna County, NM.
Sibley Hole is, as far as I can tell, the only named "hole" in Luna County. Not quite as geologically interesting as the big holes in Doña Ana county, but it does offer a nice hike through a comparatively lush section of desert country. If you look around, you'll see dozens of lizards, birds, and more than likely a cow or three.
To get there:
* From Hwy 549, turn S on Franklin Rd.
* Travel S about 6 miles on Franklin, turn left when you hit Rivera.
* Go E 1 mile to B047, turn right.
* Go S 5 miles on B047, turn left.
* Go E about 3.1 miles, until you see a gate on your left.
* Go through the gate - it's ususally open. If it's closed, then close it behind you when you pass.
* Follow the sandy road north & east for about a half mile, park in the clearing, and let your GPS take you the rest of the way. It's less than a half mile hike from the clearing to the cache site.
Roads are all good up to the gate, beyond that it's sandy.
Cache contains logbook, water rations, and small trade items. Didn't have a worthy FTF prize handy, so you'll have to settle for the glory :-)
Be sure to bring water, and watch for snakes. We passed a new arrival from Mexico along the road on the way out, so watch for that too!
