You've dabbled in the lower forest, but now it's time to take it to the next level, the top level in fact. Let your GPS lead you to the very top of the Arcata Community Forest.
This is a good hike, over three miles, with lots of elevation gain. It is totally on roads and trails; no bushwhacking is required! There is still quite a bit of mud around so don't plan on staying totally clean. It will take 1.5 to 2 hours for the total hike in and back unless you are on bike or running it. You get to see some pretty cool parts of the forest and end up at over 1100 feet elevation. You can park at N 40 deg 52.124', W 124 deg 04.012' or at a number of other access points to the forest.
There is a very special first to find award that I want to place some restrictions on. It is a Magellan Sportrak Map GPS in a nice neoprene case. With new batteries to boot. Here's the deal. Whomever takes the GPS has to give it, or another GPS, to a first time cacher who is needing one. I don't care if you keep the Sportrak Map for yourself and give your old one away or give the Map away, but there has to be some giving away going on! Please email me with the details of who ends up with what and I will provide some additional goodies that go with it (e.g. cables, etc). Other stuff in the cache include albino electrician's tape, a couple of good music CDs, a Zoo Tycoon PC Game CD, playing cards with lame uplifting messages on them, and maybe a couple of other items. Oh, yes, I almost forgot, there is also a Flying Spaghetti Monster car emblem which is almost as cool as the GPS. Please plan to trade fairly and keep the macincrap out for a while at least.
