Der Absturz eines amerikanischen Militärhubschraubers im Göppinger Stadtteil Reusch. Ein Jahr nach dem ersten Spatenstich für die katholische Christkönigskirche sollte eine vergoldetes Stahlkreuz von 400 kg auf dem Turm des Gotteshauses befestigt werden. Dieses Schauspiel zog Hunderte von Schaulustigen an. Auf Bitte der Bauleitung übernahm eine Hubschrauber-Besatzung der damals in Göppingen stationierten 4. US-Panzerdivision den Transport vom Hersteller des Kreuzes in Donzdorf auf das Dach des Kirchturmes. Das Kreuz war schon am Kampanile befestigt, als eine Windböe den Hubschrauber erfasste. Da noch ein Halteseil die Maschine mit dem Kreuz verband, hatte der Pilot keine Möglichkeit, dieser Bewegung entgegenzusteuern. Das Kreuz bog um, der Hubschrauber kippte vornüber ab und schlug unter einem Aufschrei der Menschenmenge im noch offenen Kirchenraum auf. Die drei Besatzungsmitglieder wurden sofort aus den Trümmern der Maschine geborgen. Der Pilot Captain Samuel D. Delozier war so schwer verletzt, dass er nicht mehr ins Militärhospital nach Bad Cannstatt geflogen werden konnte, er starb kurz nach der Einlieferung im Göppinger Kreiskrankenhaus. Feldwebel Johnny M. Rogers verstarb nur wenige Stunden später in Bad Cannstatt. Der technische Offizier Donald Fentres erlitt wie durch ein Wunder nur einen Beinbruch und zahlreiche Schnittverletzungen. Heute erinnern das schiefe Kreuz am Kirchturm und eine bronzene Gedenktafel am Turm an dieses Unglück. The crash of an American military helicopter in Göppinger District Reusch.
