Just a few short steps in the woods.
This cache is located in Oil Creek State Park. Pioneer was the
location of another oil boom town in the valley. Pioneer sprang up
as the result of an important well. The well was named Sherman
after the man who owned it, Joel Sherman. He started drilling in
1861 using the spring pole method. Soon it gushed an average of 900
barrels a day for 2 years. Joel became a millioniare. Because of
the Sherman well, the town of Pioneer sprang up. It had 2000
inhabitants, a refinery, many stores, post office, school, and a
newspaper. As you walk through the woods can you imagine all that
here? The 2 buildings that this cache take to you are of an unknown
orgin. Some speculate that they are ice houses. But others say they
could be storage houses for nitro glycerin. Or others say they
could have been food storage. Come look for yourself. Either way,
the structures are a unique piece of the past.
