The cache is situated at Barmby Barrage which was constructed in 1974 by the then Yorkshire Water Authority at the confluence of the River Derwent and the tidal River Ouse. The barrage prevents the tide from entering the River Derwent, safeguarding abstractable water for domestic supplies.
There is a large carpark with good clean toilets. It is also a recreational area with bird watching, free fishing for licence holders, it is also on the Trans Pennine Trial making the approach ideal for cyclists. It also as a wild flower meadow with picnic areas. It is also a popular mooring place for boaters.
The River Derwent is a SSSI. Otters can be seen along the banks, and if you’re lucky you might see a Water Vole.
