The cache is located along the trail to Koeneman Lake (formerly known as Fern Lake). The trail to the lake is about 1 mile and is well marked and groomed. The trail passes several private homes and a large wetland area. Just before reaching the lake, the trail becomes a wooden ladder like bridge that crosses the outlet stream from the lake. Parking at the trailhead is located across the street at Carney Lake.
A fellow geocacher, -Fortress-, and I headed out to Koeneman Lake on opening day of fishing season, 2006. We've been to the lake before and both logged finds for the geocache located at the lake, GC8540, but felt geocachers making the journey might enjoy an additional cache along the way. The cache container is an ammo box and at the time it was placed, the cache contained an assortment of small toys and games for children, and one or two items for the 'older' children. The GPSr showed accuracy of 30 feet when the first waypoint was set. We took two waypoints and averaged them but decided against waiting longer for additional waypoints due to the sudden downpour of water from the sky.
