The easiest way to the cache site is via Rotary Way Drive a scenic drive along the top of the mountain overlooking Hermanus, the turnoff from the R43 is at S34 25.036 E019 12.973. Drive as far as you can including the jeep track (not too bad condition) for a total of 6 km and park at a circular parking area at S34 23.842 E19 15.242 or 100m further on at S34 23.842 E19 15.243 don’t be tempted to take your car further unless a 4x4. Follow the jeep track further and go through the gate into the Fernkloof Nature Reserve (sorry no dogs allowed).
As you approach the site in front and below you, spread out over a large area, is the Fernkloof Nature Reserve proclaimed in 1956 and which thanks to the local branch of the Botanical Society is kept in good shape. There are about 40km of paths in the reserve and lots of good and varied views to be had.
During September to November whales can also be spotted from up here, not the closest of views, but at the height of the season there are up to 140 whales in Walker Bay which is the bay that stretches out to Danger Point in the far distance. The result of a devastating fire which raged in the area for over a week at the end of January 2006 can be seen along the coast between the lagoon mouth and Gansbaai in the distance.
From the site you can see most of the local cache sites amongst which are Lemoenkop, Hoy’s Koppie, The Great Escape, Westcliff Wander,and Harbour Charm, Lost Waterfall is in a kloof and out of sight from up here. Lately some new caches have been placed on the berg across the valley these include Bogey Bear, Breath-taker, Legless and Cyclopia.
