On the top of Monte Miseno overlooking the beautiful bay of Pozzuoli, the islands of Procida and Ischia, and on a clear day you can see Sorrento and Capri. Follow a cleared path most of the way up the hill, with the last 50m very overgrown. You can park before the tunnel and walk the steep road up, or go thru the tunnel and park at the lighthouse.

Capo Miseno (Bacoli) is the location of the ancient Roman port of Misenum, where the Tyrhennian Fleet was based. It's also the point from where Pliny the Elder observed the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. He subsequently traveled by boat to Stabiae (Castellamare) where he was killed by a pyroclastic flow from the volcano. His nephew Pliny the Younger finished writing the account of the eruption to which we owe most of our knowledge.
While in Miseno, you can visit the Piscina Mirabilis (N40 47.712 E14 04.804) which was the water cistern that furnished the fleet with fresh water. The water was carried on the Aqua Agusta (Serino) aquaduct all the way from Avellino 96 Km away. Read more about it in Richard Harris' novel "Pompei".
While at Capo Miseno, why not stop for a fantastic traditional Neapolitan lunch at the agriturismo "Il Cetrangolo" (N40 46.972 E14 05.299)...It's right down the hill from the Cache and you won't be disappointed. Call ahead (+39 081 523 2688) to make reservations as they are not open every day. Park at (N40 47.016 E14 05.231). You will need to access the area via the Hotel Cala Moresca by buzzing at the gate and saying you want to go to the Agriturismo.
The Cache is a clear Rubbermaid container with a red lid. It contains a logbook, 2 pencils, English and Italian instructions, and whatever treasures you may leave/take. PLEASE RECLOSE THE LID CAREFULLY or else it may come off (happened in Oct 06), and the contents got washed out!
I cleared the brush from the main path that leads over the hill this Fall, but the last stretch to the top is still quite overgrown.
