The Rattlesnake Canyon Earthquake is the largest earthquake in NM since 1918, and the sixth or seventh largest ever recorded (depending on which list you see).

In the early morning hours of Janyary 2, 1992, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake hit central Lea County, NM. It was felt as far away as Carlsbad, Midland and Pecos. No major damage was reported and there were no known injuries. It did cause a sensation in the surrounding towns of Eunice, Jal, Andrews and Hobbs.

This area is not a hotbed of seismic activity! What caused the Rattlesanke Canyon Earthquake? Most authorities point to the many oil wells and suggest that removal of fluids and/or the re-injection of brine water cause the quake along a previously unknown and quiet fault.

The cache is within the 2km radius circle of most likely location of the epicenter of this earthquake. It is located along the right of way of ST RD 18.
