Geocache Description:

*** CACHE IS NOT AT THE LISTED COORDINATES ***

BACKGROUND:

As a former band director, I feel the need to continue educating others about music. I will use this series of caches to share information about some of my favorite composers. Enjoy!

THE CACHE:

To determine the correct coordinates leading to the cache container, you must first explore the life and works of Gustav Holst by answering the following questions:

  1. Gustav Holst was born Cheltenham, England in 1874. What was the month and date of his birth?
    • If April 20th, then A = 3
    • If June 13th, then A = 5
    • If August 2nd, then A = 7
    • If September 21st, then A = 9

  2. Holst wrote the "First Suite for Military Band in Eb" in 1909. This work has three movements. The movement named Intermezzo is marked vivace (very fast) and through the vibrant tempo we are shown the Holst's mastery in writing for woodwind instruments. Which movement is named Intermezzo?
    • If Movement 1, then B = 3
    • If Movement 2, then B = 5
    • If Movement 3, then B = 7

  3. Holst wrote another popular work for band entitled "Second Suite for Military Band in F" (1911). This work has four movements. In one movement (named Fantasia on the "Dargason"), Holst uses a catchy six-eight tune that is woven throughout all the instruments, including a duet between the piccolo and tuba, and combines it with the familiar "Greensleeves." Which movement is named Fantasia on the "Dargason".
    • If Movement 1, then C = 2
    • If Movement 2, then C = 4
    • If Movement 3, then C = 6
    • If Movement 4, then C = 8

  4. Holst was well acquainted with the working of wind instruments even though his primary instrument was the piano. What brass instrument did he play in the Scottish Orchestra and the Carl Rosa Opera Company?
    • If trumpet, then D = 5
    • If French Horn, then D = 6
    • If trombone, then D = 7
    • If tuba, then D = 8
  5.

  6. "The Planets" (also known as "The Planets Suite"), opus 32, is an orchestral suite by Gustav Holst. It was written between 1914 and 1916 and received its first complete public performance on October 10, 1920 in Birmingham, with Appleby Matthews conducting. The suite has seven movements, each of them named after a planet (and its corresponding Roman deity). Which of these movements is reported to have been Holst's favorite?
    • If "Mars, the Bringer of War", then E = 3
    • If "Venus, the Bringer of Peace", then E = 5
    • If "Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity", then E = 7
    • If "Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age", then E = 9

  1. Shortly after the end of World War I, Holst composed "Ode to Death," based upon a poem by which famous American poet?
    • If Walt Whitman, then F = 1
    • If Emily Dickinson, then F = 2
    • If Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, then F = 3
    • If Edgar Allen Poe, then F = 4

Now plug these variables into the formula below to learn the correct coordinates. You will need to park in the nearby parking lot (very obvious) and walk to the location of the cache - do not access from the street, get to the cache by walking through the grassy area. You'll be looking for a magnetic container holding a small logbook. Bring your own writing utensil to sign the log. No room for trade items but the FTF gets one of my wooden geocoins.
