Geocache Description:

Park at the north side of SR101 (Castalia Quarry Reserve, Erie MetroParks parking lot), and please be careful when crossing the road. The Reserve is open to the public daily from 8 am to dusk, year-round. No drinking water is available on the site. Seasonal restroom facilities are located north of SR 101. Mountain bikes are allowed on trails only with a permit from EMP. http://www.eriemetroparks.org/default.htm

Castalia Quarry Reserve, located on SR101, in Margaretta Township-Castalia, Ohio is full of sights that are too unfamiliar to a couple of NWO flatlanders like ourselves. The Erie MetroParks have a lot to offer, and are very cacher-friendly. This is a cache type that we’ve wanted to place, but have been unable to…until now. Enjoy the walk. There are several caches here by the LoCo cachers as well, to multiply your caching enjoyment.

Eric "SherwoodForest" was a very special Geocacher. A Self-Proclaimed Ambassador, he not only represented the Northeast Ohio Geocachers at events in other areas, he was an advocate for the entire sport to park districts, lawmakers, and even people on the street.

You might think that with an attitude like this, that Eric might have been arrogant or boastful. Nothing could be further from the truth. Eric had a mild demeanor that earned him the common description "Gentle Giant". Eric won friends by listening. He encouraged and welcomed the people who were least convinced of their sanity in enjoying such an underground sport. He encouraged people on to their personal bests and challenged all of us to expect more from ourselves.

Eric was partly responsible for many big initiatives in Ohio. He was instrumental in the formation of GeocacheOhio (GO) and the Midwest GeoBash. He helped promote the All-Ohio Women's Event and aided in the flight of the men-folk with the matching "Ohio Men's Escape Weekend".

Eric is truely missed, but in so many ways his influence is all around us. It's in the people, the caches and the culture of Geocaching. To represent this, we have chosen to dedicate a series of caches that we hope will represent the impact that our friend, SherwoodForest had on our sport and our lives.

As Eric would say, "Cache well, and see you 'round the bend."

You may want to hunt stage 1 when finding others on the quarry floor. Hike to Stage 1. You will not need to climb on any rocks or up the cliff. Keep those feet on the ground while looking for a camouflaged beach safe container with the coords to stage 2.

Hike to Stage 2. Stages are 202 feet apart... Remember, the short way is prohibited in this park. You are looking for a olive green metal French Army first aid container (which I recieved at the 2005 Ohio Women's event, from 4 leaf clover). The cache is located 10-12 feet off the southeast edge of the trail. DO NOT LOOK on the side of the trail nearest the rim. The cache is under some stones, think before you move! There is a nice place to sit to trade and sign. Please respect the area.

Please, keep an eye on children at all times in this park. I hope you enjoy Castalia Quarry Reserve.
