This cache is located near the remains of the original gate house for the Skylands estate. Back when the property was owned by Francis Stetson, visitors to the estate would come in from Route 17 and ring the bell on the gate that went between the house and the barn. The gatekeeper would call the manor house to announce the visitors before letting them through. The gate house and surrounding property were purchased by John and Ruth White sometime in the 1950’s. Ruth died a few years later and for a while, John lived there alone until marrying Millie in the early to mid 1960’s. A year or so later, their daughter, Bonnie was born and shortly after that, John passed away. Millie and her daughter lived in the old gate house until the state decided to claim eminent domain on the property. Millie did not want to leave the house and fought with the state. The state made life miserable for Millie, digging up the road to her house and eventually cutting off the electricity to her home. Millie gave up the fight and moved to Connecticut where she still lives to this day. Bonnie moved out to San Francisco where she met and married a man from Australia and she now lives in Australia. The house and barn are now empty, vandalized and falling apart, but at one time it was a happy and cozy, though somewhat isolated place to live.
PLEASE NOTE: There is a $5.00 parking fee, on weekends and holidays, from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
