Geocache Description:

Located in J. Maynard Municipal Forest in Vernon, VT. Located off trail by Black Gum Tree Swamp.

Misc. cute items in Rubbermaid type container. The J. Maynard Memorial Forest is a town owned and managed land named after my grandfather, who did a great deal of volunteer work in preserving and actively managing the forest. The forest has about 9 black gum tree swamps, which my grandfather discovered about 30 years ago. It is a curiosity to have this species this far north, as it is prevalent in more tropical areas. The tree is distinctive in its 90 degree branches, and VERY deep bark on one side of the tree trunk. The verugations can be up to 5" on a leaning tree on the underside, yet nearly smooth on the upper side. This geocache is more to honor my grandfather's work, while enjoying a nice hike, than finding any particular treasure.
