An all day event with games for the kids and
adults alike!
Game Prizes!
Raffle Drawings!!
and of course, Stories of being "Caught
Red-Handed"!!!
1. There will be an "Unwrapped Raffle"!
Participants will bring an unwrapped item,
costing between $5 and $10. That item will be placed on
a table with all other unwrapped raffle items. You may bring
more than 1 item. A numbered Orange ticket will be given to
each participant, for each item they bring. So, winning more
than one prize is possible, if you bring more than one prize.
Each unwrapped item will be given a numbered Blue
ticket. Not only will the person winning the prize be random,
so will the prize in which that person wins. Therefore, no
reason to wrap anything! Although this should go without
saying, I am saying it. DO NOT BRING SOMETHING YOU WOULD BE
ASHAMED OF TAKING HOME, BECAUSE WITH A RAFFLE DRAWING, YOU JUST
MIGHT!
2. There will be a GPS accuracy exercise!
All participants will be given the same exact
coordinates to a "spot" in the park. At the same time,
participants will proceed to where their GPSr tells them is "ground
zero". The person or persons, some folks never cache alone,
who come the closest, will be the one named with the most accurate
GPSr! There is nothing to find at the predetermined "spot",
so it will be most important to stop walking when your GPSr shows
you at "ground zero". Which GPSr will be the winner,
Garmin? Magellan? LowRance? DeLorme? We will
see!!
3. Scavenger Hunt for the kids.
Taking it back to the basics for the kids, there
will be a good ol' fashion scavenger hunt. A list of
particular items will be given out at the picnic, that the children
will have to find. All participants will receive a "grab bag"
gift. Children who complete the scavenger hunt list by the
deadline, will have their name entered into a drawing for the Grand
Prize. All children will have an opportunity to make an art
project out of their items when the hunt is over.
4. Lastly, but definitely not least, there will
be a "Caught Red-Handed" Story
Contest!
Have you ever been "Caught Red-Handed" trying to retrieve a cache?
Perhaps you were caught by another Geocacher, a muggle, or even by
the police? Whoever caught you, we want to know. We
want to know all the hilarious details of your ordeal.
Participants MUST
submit a story to me at tomcatATgod@yahoo.com , telling
us how you were "Caught Red-Handed"! All stories to be considered
for the contest, and possibly the BEST
"Caught Red-Handed" story must be
submitted prior to July 4th, 2006. We have to have time to
determine the BEST story.
Stories must include your best story telling effort. The
BEST story will be determined by the
amount of overall entertainment supplied to the reader, US.
This is NOT a writing contest, we are
only interested in hearing about your story, not judging you on
your creative writing skills, so please don't worry about your lack
of writing skills!
Your story will be included in a binder and all
stories will be available to the Geocachers at the event, to
read. So, please keep your stories PG rated. That
binder or binders of stories, will then be turned into a Travel
Bug, to be released and travel the globe. Our stories,
available for others to read, along with the opportunity for others
being "Caught Red-Handed" to add their
stories as well. The inspiration for this idea came from that
of a not so local, but still locally well-known,
cacher. Apparently his father enjoys reading about his
adventures and antics. So, now there will be a Travel Bug
binder full of adventures and antics for him to read about, when
the travel bug makes its way to him.
The last thing about the "Caught
Red-Handed" stories that you
need to know is this. You MUST attend the event in order to be
eligible for the BEST
story. Attending does NOT
mean you arrive at 9:55am and depart at 6:05pm. It
means you MUST have your name in
the logbook at the time the BEST
story is announced. If you are NOT there at that time, but have signed the
logbook, you will still receive your prize. A story
submitted without that cacher attending will be
disqualified.
THE PARTICULARS
Please remember, when planning for this event,
this is an ALL day event. Two meals will be made.
We will be providing the paper products needed
for the picnic, plates, plastic ware, napkins, cups etc. We
are providing Chicken, Hot Dogs and Burgers for meals. It has
occurred to us that a variety of meats will suit everyone's tastes
a little better. I will be cooking Chicken, Burgers and Hot
Dogs for lunch and whatever is leftover will be cooked up at
dinner.
In light of the recent
addition of Burgers and Hot Dogs, I will need someone to volunteer
to bring Hot Dog and Hamburger Rolls. Someone will need to
bring condiments, ketchup, mustard, relish, etc. It might
also be nice for someone to bring chips and maybe some
snacks.
As for the rest of the picnic food, the event
should operate as usual. Everyone bring a side dish, or
dessert. We will bring a case of water. If a couple
people could match that, that would be great. If a couple
folks could bring a variety of carbonated soft drinks, that would
be awesome! Remember, I like Pepsi & Dr. Pepper :)
There is a playground very near the pavilion, so
the children can play close by. There are basketball courts
close by as well, so bring a ball and shoot some hoops. There
are Horseshoe pits near our pavilion as well for some of the old
timers if Horseshoes is your game. There are a few baseball
fields around, perhaps a game of catch will be in order.
There is a public restroom across the street from our pavilion, so
that shouldn't be an issue. This park does NOT have 1 huge parking lot, it has several
smaller ones. So, the later you get there, the further away
you can anticipate parking from our pavilion.
The last thing I can think to mention is
this. There are a couple caches in the park, like 3. We
do NOT anticipate putting anymore
out. This is a busy park. There are hundreds of caches
nearby in Virginia Beach, so finding one shouldn't be a
problem. This event is suppose to be centered around
fellowship. Hanging around, swapping lies, telling stories,
what works for caching, what doesn't. It's an opportunity to
get to know your fellow cachers without actually caching.
Take in some good food, good ideas, good conversation and when you
leave you will have a better understanding of the sport/hobby of
geocaching and the people who geocache. And you'll get 1
yellow smiley!

Keep a watch on this page, as there are sure to
be some changes.
