Balvaird Castle to the east of Glenfarg stands on the border between Perthshire and Fife.
Constructed originally for Sir Andrew Murray, a younger son of the Murrays of Tullibardine, on land acquired through marriage to Margaret Barclay, the castle started life as a tower house before several phases of construction added exterior buildings, a gate house and a curtain wall.
After several generations the final Murray left the castle, and moved to Scone Palace having acquired the Earldom of Mansfield. The castle remained in occupation for a further three hundred years with the final tennants believed to have been agricultural labourers. The castle is now a scheduled ancient monument in the care of Historic Scotland and for this reason the final cache location lies outwith the castle grounds.
Free parking is available at N56°17.272, W003°20.897 from where it is a short uphill walk to the castle itself. Once in the grounds, please use the information on the display boards to answer the following questions.
1. Construction of the castle started in about the year abcd
2. The gatehouse range was added in the year efgh
3. The Murray family moved out to Scone palace in the year jkmn
The cache can be found at N56 17.uvw, W003 20.xyz, where;
