Geocache Description:

This is an interesting place shown to me by a scouting friend several years ago. If any Jekyll Island history buffs know more history, please send me the details and I'll post them. As you can see from the many logs below, insect repellent is highly recommended.

Park at the south end of Macy Lane next to the trailhead. Walk south along the trail. Just past the large concrete survey marker on the right hand side, you will see a another trail. Follow that trail to the cache. July 19, 2006 Update: I received the following email from "tarvol_2000" (July 1, 2006 log): "... apparently the battery is older than you thought. If you check the nearby benchmarks on the cache page you will see that there is a record from 1905 that the battery was placed there during the Spanish American War. Surprising, but makes it even more interesting. From reading the benchmark notes, it appears the carriages were turned over on their sides at one time and later replaced upright." Also, the following was posted by "tombohannon" (June 3, 2006 log): "The battery was established 1898 - 1899. Two temporary Spanish-American War batteries were built here, one on the north-end of the island, and one on the south-end. An artesian well was sunk in 1899. Damaged by a storm in 1899, then abandoned." Note: This geocache was placed with permission from the Jekyll Island Authority (JIA). Approved by park ranger Ray Emerson on Jan. 23, 2024.
